TOEFL Eligibility Criteria
As such there is no eligibility criterion for taking the TOEFL examination, however, the TOEFL examination is usually taken by international students for taking admission into Universities. For taking admission to the universities, their respective eligibility criteria will be applicable.
TOEFL Registration
Candidates can follow these steps to register themselves for the TOEFL examination-
- Candidates have to visit the official website of TOEFL using this link- www.ets.org/toefl
- Now you have to create an account by clicking on “Register Now”
- A form will appear asking for various details like name, address, email address, and much more
- Now after filling out the application form, the candidates have to select the date for the examination
- Select the examination center that is near your residence
- Now, a payment page appears where you have to pay the application fee using a credit/debit card, UPI, Net Banking, etc.
- After the payment is done, download the acknowledgment receipt for future use

TOEFL Exam Pattern
The TOEFL exam pattern is decided by the ETS, the conducting body that governs the TOEFL exam. It consists of four sections, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. The following is the detailed examination pattern of TOEFL Examination-

TOEFL Syllabus
The TOEFL examination is divided into four sections and each section is important. Each section of the TOEFL examination tests an aspect of the English language. The following is the TOEFL syllabus which is divided into four sections-
Reading Comprehension
In the reading section, the candidate will be provided with 3-5 passages (250-500+ words) and 12-14 questions each related to the passage. The candidate will have to answer those questions by reading the comprehensions. Here, his/her reading and responsiveness will be tested.
Question type: 3–4 passages, 10 questions each
Total no. of questions: About 40
Total time: 54-72 minutes
Listening Section
In the listening section, the candidate will have to listen to a conversation of both long and short length and based on this conversation has to answer the questions. After each short audio, you will be asked one question with four choices of answers. In long conversations, you will be asked multiple questions based on the conversation with four choices.
Question type: Short as well as Long conversations
- 3–4 audio (3-5 minutes long, about 500-800 words), 6 questions each; About 30 questions in total
- 2–3 conversations (about 3 minutes long, about 12-25 exchanges), 5 questions each; About 12 questions in total
Total no. of questions: 40+
Total time: 41–57 minutes
Speaking Section
In the speaking section, the candidate will be scored based on these conversation skills and his/her ability to speak English correctly and without stuttering. The English have to be conversational, clear, and understandable, the scoring will be done based on how well the conversation takes place.

- 1 independent task (prep time: 15 sec; response time: 45 sec)
- 3 integrated tasks – Read/Listen/Speak (prep time: 30 sec; response time: 60 sec)

Writing Section
Writing Section is how you write English. The articulation of words, vocabulary, grammar, and clarity matters in this section. The questions asked could be related to the above sections as well so, it is required by the candidate to pick each topic up while giving the examination.
Writing Questions Covered in TOEFL Syllabus:
- 1 integrated task – Read/Listen/Write (20 minutes) (reading time: 3 min; listening time: 2 min; writing: 15 min)
- 1 independent task (30 minutes)

TOEFL Result & Test Scores
TOEFL scores the candidates based on how proficient the candidate is in the English language. ETS the conducting body uses the linguistic method of speaking, writing, listening, and reading as a way to analyze the candidate. Based on this analysis the candidate will be scored and that scores will be used by the candidates to take admission in the foreign universities.
The candidate will be scored out of 120, there is no pass or fail in this test, however, scoring better on the examination will lead to smooth admission into the desired university. TOEFL scores are accepted worldwide by more than 11,000 universities and institutions in over 150 countries. It is the most reputable English-language test for study, work, and immigration.
