Muharram 2024 Date
Muharram marks the anniversary of forced migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. IN the year 622, the Prophet along with his companions were forced to leave Mecca and moved towards Medina and from then Hijri calendar started. Prior this day, Prophet Muhammad was not allowed to spread the message of Islam in Mecca. After the invasion of Mecca in 629, the Prophet was returned to the city. Muharram 2024 date is on July 17, Wednesday, 2024.
It is the mourning day instead of celebrating like other celebrations. No celebrations are made and in fact this month is of utmost importance to Shia Muslims. As per the sources, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhmmad and son of Hazrat Ali, was died in the battle of Karbala on tenth day of Muharram in 680. Besides Muharram, the day is also known as ‘Ashura’ and Shia Muslims mourn the death of Imam Hussain for the initial 10 days of this month.

- Shia Muslims beat their chest and this activity is known as Latyma and several others even cut their foreheads.
- On this day, Sunni Muslims pay their homage to Prophet Moses and do not participate in the ritual.
- It is a tradition to read a book named ‘Ziarat Ashura’ containing the information about martyrs of Karbala.
- Muslims welcome the New Year by praying to Allah and spending time with their family and friends. They also visit mosque and offer prayers. Later they eat homw cooked food and share with their family and friends. To break their fast, something sweet is cooked and shared with family and friends.
How is the day of Muharram Spent?
As told earlier that Muharram is the time of recalling the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain by Shia Muslims. The mourning begins from the first night of Muharram and continues for 2 months and 8 days. However, a great importance is given on the first ten days. The entire community wears black clothes on the first day of Muharram and offer prayers. The black is selected for mourning because it denotes the color of grieving. And on the tenth day, Shia Muslims begin processions on streets by walking barefoot on road.
They moan loudly for Hussain. On the last i.e. the tenth day of Muharram, it is a gazetted holiday in the nation. All the post offices, banks and government offices remain closed on this day. Specifically, Islamic businesses and shops remain close for the entire day. Huge parades, marches, and prayer meetings are organized in Muslim dominating places.
