Mahavir Jayanti 2024 Date
Mahavir Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira. According to Jain religious scripts, Lord Mahavira was born on 13th day of the waxing moon on Chaitra month in Patna, Bihar. During that time, Vaishali was the capital of Bihar. However, Swetambar Jains, believe that Mahavira was born in 599 BC whereas Digambars believe that Lord Mahavir was born in 615 BC. His parents King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala given him the name Vardhaman.

The Swetambar’s believed that his mother had 14 dreams and later astrologers said that Mahavira would either become an emperor or a sage. At the age of 30, Mahavira left his home and family to seek the truth. He lived an ascetic life for 12 years. After leaving a luxurious life, he started preaching non-violence and treated others with reverence. He received his name ‘Mahavira’ as he has shown his skills in controlling the senses. Mahavira attained enlightenment or Nirvanna at the age of 72.

The Jain Community has high regards for Lord Mahavir. They pledge to abide by the rules laid by Lord Mahavira. On Jayanti, idol of Lord Mahavira is worshipped by the Jain Community. These people wash the effigy of Mahavir with the fragranced oil and show their love towards the Lord. Devotees in different parts of the world visit Jain temples. The most renowned destination to visit on the occasion is Gomateshwara. An interesting thing is that Jains donate food and money to temples and festivities are same.
Mahavir Jayanti Celebration
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated to win over peace and harmony. Along with this, during the celebration, the teachings of Lord Mahavira are spread all over. ‘Rath Yatra’ is carried out in which Lord Mahavira's idol is placed on the top. All the Jain temples are decorated with flowers and foods as well as clothes are donated to the needy people. The Jain religion is against animal slaughter and thus donations are given to stop animal killings. Besides charitable acts, prayers are proffered in Jain temples. Some devotees even engage in meditation. Some of the old and popular Jain temples conduct teachings of Lord Mahavira through monks and nuns.
It is celebrated in different parts of the country especially in Delhi, Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
