Maha Navmi is a special day before ‘Vijaya’. Maha Navmi is the nineth day before Vijay Dashmi. It is the final day of Navratri before Vijaya Dashmi appears. On this day, Goddess Durga is worshipped in several forms in different parts of the nation. The festival is celebrated on Navam or Ninth day of Shukla paksha in the Ashwina month of Hindu Calendar. Maha Navmi appears in the month of September or October every year. Maha Navami 2024 date is October 12, Saturday, 2024.
Maha Navami and Its Significance
As per the mythology, Goddess Durga fought a battle with Mahishasur, the demon king which lasted for nine days. The ninth day is the last day before Goddess Durga won the good over evil using her power and strength. Therefore, Maha Navami is also known as the starting of something new on Vijaya Dashmi.
Important Rituals of Maha Navmi
Here are the essential rituals performed on Maha Navmi:
- On this special day, people worship Goddess Durga as Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. In Southern India, Ayudha Puja is commenced along with the Goddess, tools, machineries, musical instruments, books, and equipments such as automobiles are decorated and worshipped. This is a vital daybefore starting anew day on Vijaya Dashami.
- From this onwards, children start going to school in various parts of South India.
- In Northern and Eastern part of India In Kanya Puja is done in various places of India. As per this ritual, young virgin girls are worshipped as the forms of Goddess Durga. People wash their feet, apply kumkum applied on their forehead. They are offered new clothes, mantras are performed. Special food is cooked for girls and they are offered gifts as token of love and respect.
- In the Eastern part of India, Maha Navmi starts with bath followed with Shodhasopachar puja. Besides this, Devi Durga is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini (Goddess who killed Mahishasur, the buffalo demon). The demon was annihilated on this day.
- A ritual named Navami hom is performed at the end of Navami puja. In several places, an ancient of Navami Bali, or the sacrifice of animals is still practiced. IN various places of Andhra Pradesh, the Batthukamma festival is held on Navami. The name is fully inspired by a beautiful flower. The Puja is performed by Hindu women and flowers are arranged in seven-layer in a conical shape. They flowersare offered to Goddess Gauri, another form of Durga. This festival celebrates the glory of womanhood.
- Some other pujas are also performed named as Suvasini Puja and Dampati puja.
- In Mysore, it is the tradition to worship the Royal sword and then processions are performed on camels and elephants.
- Maha Navmi is also known as Durga Navmi, the ninth day of Navratri Puja is celebrated in different parts of India. Maha Navmi is the last day of worship before the day of Vijaya Dashmi.
- IN various states of Southern India, The day is celebrated as Astra Puja or Ayudha Puja.
- Maha Navmi is celebrated prominently in West Bengal Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Bihar. People celebrate the day with enthusiasm and devotion.
- Lord Ganesha and Karthikeya are also worshipped along with Goddesses.
