Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024 Date

Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurupurab is an important festival of Sikh religion. It is a crucial festival of Sikh religion followers. The day is celebrated as an occasion to birth anniversary of Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The festival appears every year on the day of Kartik Poornima, the fifteenth day of Lunar Eclipse. Mostly, the festival falls in the month of November.

Guru Nanak Jayanti Background

As already told, Guru Nanak Jayanti is the birthday of Sikh’s first guru. He was born on April 15, 1469, at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, near Lahore, Pakistan. A huge gurudwara is constructed at his birth place in the city known as Nankana Sahib. It is situated in Punjab, Pakistan. Guru Nanak, is regarded as the spiritual guru of Sikhism in 15th century. He wrote Guru Granth Sahib, a holy book of Sikhs which got completed with 974 hymns. The main verses in Guru Granth Sahib consisted about the details of the almighty. Besides this, he preaches about selfless service to the community which leads to prosperity and humanity.

How Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated?

The celebration starts in Gurudwara two days prior to Guru Nanak Jayanti. Akhand path is commenced for continuously 2 days. A day prior Guru Nanak’s birthday, a procession ‘Nagarkirtan’ is commenced. This procession is led by five men known as Panj Pyare, holding Nishan Sahib, Sikh triangular flag with them. After this, Guru Grant Sahib is placed in a palanquin during the procession. And people sing the hymns and sing traditional music instruments. They also exhibit Martial Arts skill.  This joyful procession goes through different streets decorated with floags as well as garlands.

Langar

The word Langar is a Persian word meaning a place for needy and poor. As per the Sikh tradition, it is the name given to community kitchen. The aims of Langar is to provide food to needy and others irrespective of age, caste, colour, religion, and gender. Whosoever comes to Gurudwara is given a warm welcome and give the treatment of the guest. It is believed that when Guru Nanak was a child, his father gave him money and asked him to do a good bargain ‘Sacha Sauda’. His father was a wealthy and well-renowned trader of his village. He wanted Nanak to manage family business when he was 12 years old. Nanak has not purchased anything from the market but bought food from that money and fed saints who had been hungry for days. And that is what he said “true business”.
On the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti, processions take place followed by Langar at Gurudwaras by Sikhs.

It is largely seen that gurudwaras offer food and shelter to people in need. In case of emergency too, gurudwaras never hesitate in helping them. Outside India as well, Sikhs are always ready to help food and shelter to those who are in need. They give as much help as possible to people in need at the time of adversity.
