Diwali 2024 Dates

Diwali, an auspicious festival of Hindus is celebrated in October or November month every year. The literal meaning of Diwali or Deepavali is the ‘line of diyas’. It is a festival of lights celebrated in Northern, Western, and Eastern parts of Indian land. The festival teaches the triumph of good over evil.

In year 2024, Diwali will be celebrated on October 31, Thursday, 2024. This festival of lights is celebrated with pomp and show in different states such as Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. List of Diwali Puja: Check the puja performed during Diwali:

  • Dhanteras: On Dhanteras, people pray Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber. It is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver or other metal on this day. In fact purchasing utensils is also considered auspicious this day.
  • Choti Diwali/Narak Chaturdashi: After Dhanteras, next day is celebrated as Choti Diwali/ Narak Chaturdashi. According to Hindu mythology, on this day Lord Krishna killed Narakasura in a fight.
  • Diwali: Diwali comes after Choti Diwali. In this day, people perform Lakshmi Puja. On Diwali, Lord Rama killed Ravana and returned to Ayodhya. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth is welcomed. People clean their houses before Diwali approaches. People perform Lakshmi pujs, wear new clothes, and light their houses with earthen pots. The goddess bestow luck and prosperity on people those who pray her with faith.
  • Govardhan Puja: Next day, people perform Govardhan Puja, a day to worship Lord Krishna. People believed that Lord Krishna saved the citizens of Mathura along with Lord Indra by lifting the "Govardhan" mountain. People prepare annakoot Prasad and offer it to Lord Krishna.
  • Bhai Dooj: On fifth and the last day, Bhai Dooj is celebrated. Sisters tie the thread indicating strong on the wrist of their brothers. This festival is similar to Raksha Bandhan, observed on the second day Shukla Paksha. 

Importance of Diwali: Diwali is a beautiful festival of Hindus. People start making preparation of this festival with great excitement. They clean and whitewash their houses, renovate their homes, and buy new products. It is considered auspicious to purchase new things during this festival. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped for prosperity and wealth. This great festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Certainly, it is the most awaited Indian festival. In some part of the nation, the festival denotes the arrival of New Year.

  • The Day#1 denotes new financial year for businesses. Business class, entrepreneurs, and others pray Goddess Lakshmi for wealth.
  • On Day#2, cleansing takes place by taking oil baths and wearing new clothes.
  • Day#3 is a new moon day and holiday on the occasion of Diwali.
  • Day#4 is Kartika Shudda Padyami or Govardhan Puja.
  • Day#5 is the final day denoting the love between sisters and brothers.

How is the Day Celebrated?  


As already mentioned, the festival is celebrated on the occasion of return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lakshman after 14 years of exile. People celebrate this festival for five days. Houses and workplaces are cleaned and beautifully decorated with oil lamps. However, these days people also use electric lights to enhance the beauty of their places. During Lakshmi Pujan, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha served sweets. People exchange sweets and gifts with their friends and relatives. In fact fairs are organized in villages and small towns. 

Diwali Holidays and Public Life: Diwali, a significant festival in India celebrated all over. It is a public holiday when banks, post offices, and government offices remain closed. Commercial places are closed or reduced working hours are given to employees. Employers offer gifts to their employees. In fact, in some of the work places, employees are offered bonus as well. As already mentioned, Diwali is celebration time, some of the families even plan a trip to their favorite destination during this time. Some of the most visited places during Diwali holidays are Goa, Jaipur, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Delhi.
